UMF Craiova, in the National Top for Research Quality. THE 2027 Confirms: Rising Scores in Education, Research, and Industry Income

The University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Craiova ranks fourth among Romanian universities in the "Research Quality" indicator of the Times Higher Education 2027 rankings, achieving a score of 63.2 points, up from 59.4 points in the previous edition. This 3.8-point increase highlights progress in evaluating the impact and influence of scientific results. Among other factors, this pillar of the ranking tracks publication citations and the presence of high-impact research within the international scientific circuit. Progress is also recorded in the component dedicated to education and the learning environment (Teaching), where the score rose from 26.1 to 27.6 points. For the Research Environment, the score climbed from 10.4 to 12.9, and for the relationship with industry and knowledge transfer (Industry Income), from 23.0 to 23.7 points. The 2027 edition of the Times Higher Education World University Rankings includes 2,297 universities across 118 countries and territories. The evaluation uses 17 performance indicators, grouped into five dimensions: teaching, research environment, research quality, international outlook, and industry. For the UMF Craiova community, these results represent a recognition of the hard work put in by teaching staff, researchers, PhD students, and undergraduates. The evolution of these scores provides a benchmark for the university's ongoing development by supporting research and an academic environment where the training of future healthcare professionals and the generation of knowledge mutually reinforce each other.

UMF Craiova celebrates the 740 graduates of the class of 2026.

The University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Craiova will host the graduation ceremony for the Class of 2026 on Sunday, October 4, 2026, at 11:00 AM at the Polivalentă Hall in Craiova. This event celebrates the 740 graduates completing their university studies as they prepare for the next chapter of their professional journeys The ceremony will bring together graduates, professors, families, and friends to share a moment of joy and recognition for years of hard work. It marks a success built on dedicated study, perseverance, and practical experience, while offering an opportunity to express gratitude to those who supported them along the way. The Class of 2026 includes 740 graduates from the following programs: Medicine (taught in Romanian and English) Dental Medicine (taught in Romanian and English) Dental Technique Pharmacy Medical Cosmetics and Cosmetic Product Technology General Nursing Balneophysiokinetotherapy and Rehabilitation Nutrition and Dietetics Radiology and Imaging This year's ceremony is especially significant as it marks the graduation of the very first classes from the Medical Cosmetics and Cosmetic Product Technology and Nutrition and Dietetics programs, representing a milestone in the academic development of UMF Craiova. United by years of study, shared laboratory experiences, and clinical rotations, the graduates will celebrate alongside their professors and loved ones. UMF Craiova remains their Alma Mater—the place where they built their professional foundation, found role models, and formed lifelong friendships. UMF Craiova opens the 2026-2027 academic year The University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Craiova is organizing the opening ceremony of the 2026–2027 academic year on Thursday, October 1, 2026, starting at 9:00 AM, in the Aula Magna. Students and faculty members are invited to the event to welcome together a new year of training and discovery. For first-year students, this day marks the beginning of their path toward a profession and their introduction to a new community. For the returning students and professors heading back to the lecture halls and laboratories, it is a moment of reunion and a continuation of projects with renewed energy and aspirations. Tomorrow starts now! Let us look to the future with confidence and build it, day by day, through knowledge, courage, and collaboration.

The University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Craiova actively supports students through European-funded social scholarships

The University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Craiova has been actively involved in awarding social scholarships funded by European grants to students from disadvantaged backgrounds and groups. By July 2026, this initiative had reached over 36,000 students nationwide, providing them with the necessary financial support to continue their education. This support is part of the project "Interventions for Tertiary Education – Systemic Measures to Prevent and Reduce University Dropout", project code SMIS 322473. The project aims to increase access to higher education and boost retention rates among young people. One of its key interventions consists of providing social scholarships to students from disadvantaged backgrounds to support their access, participation, and retention in higher education. Beneficiary students from the 44 participating higher education institutions across the country received full monthly scholarships. The funds allocated so far have reached nearly 157 million RON, effectively disbursed to students in the form of over 174,000 individual scholarship payments.At the University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Craiova, over 1,600 scholarship payments were awarded to 320 students between March and July. Consequently, these students benefited from full monthly scholarships of 925 RON/month, totaling nearly 1.5 million RON. In addition to financial support, students had access to 10 webinars organized between June 8 and 12, which brought together approximately 4,000 participants. The topics addressed key challenges of student life, including: Effective learning techniques Stress and time management Awareness of student rights and university facilities Preparation for graduation Based on the questions raised during these meetings, a set of practical guides was developed as resources that students can consult at any time and at their own pace. The materials cover essential aspects of the academic journey—from time management and study organization to stress management, legal rights, and preparing the final graduation thesis. Although addressed to all students regardless of their year or field of study, they were designed primarily as additional support for social scholarship recipients and students from disadvantaged backgrounds. This activity is carried out within the project "Interventions for Tertiary Education – Systemic Measures to Prevent and Reduce University Dropout", project code SMIS 322473. The project is implemented by the Executive Agency for Higher Education, Research, Development and Innovation Funding (UEFISCDI), in partnership with the Ministry of Education, and is co-funded by the European Social Fund+ through the Education and Employment Programme 2021-2027, as well as the national budget.

Call for applications: “StudyInRomania – Student Ambassadors” program

Dear Colleagues, Last year, within the project "Romania at Horizon 2030: Increasing international relevance through the internationalization of higher education," implemented by the Executive Agency for Higher Education, Research, Development and Innovation Funding (UEFISCDI), in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Research (MySMIS Code: 319112), we successfully conducted the first edition of the "Study in Romania Student Ambassadors" program. Following the call for applications, 12 student ambassadors—both Romanian and international—were selected. Over the past year, they contributed to promoting Romania as a study destination by creating content, participating in national and international events, and promoting the authentic study experience in Romanian universities. Given the results achieved and the positive impact of the program, we wish to continue this initiative in the 2026–2027 academic year by launching a new call to expand the Study in Romania Student Ambassadors team. Under this call, 5 new students will be selected to join the existing team of ambassadors, contributing to the international promotion of Romanian higher education and the #StudyInRomania brand. The University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Craiova, via its Technology Transfer Center (CTT UMFCv), secured a perfect score of 100 points in UEFISCDI's national selection call for the 'Leadership TT – University Leadership for Knowledge and Technology Transfer' program. Funded through the 2021-2027 Education and Employment Program and co-financed by the European Union, this initiative seeks to boost universities' ability to turn research into impactful economic and social solutions, while consolidating ties with the business sector. Achieving the maximum score confirms the institutional maturity of UMF Craiova in the field of technology transfer. It serves as a validation of how the university has built and developed the mechanisms through which research results can be leveraged for the benefit of society and the economy. By participating in the Leadership TT program, the team of the Technology Transfer Center of UMF Craiova will benefit from mentorship and expertise provided by Oxentia, an organization originating from the University of Oxford, internationally recognized for its work in innovation management, entrepreneurship, and the commercialization of research results. This partnership grants our university access to models and best practices utilized by some of the world's highest-performing innovation ecosystems. Beyond the recognition of institutional performance, this result sends a clear message to companies, entrepreneurs, and organizations interested in innovation: UMF Craiova is a partner ready to develop joint research and development, technology transfer, and innovation projects. Alongside UMF Craiova, socio-economic partners can get involved in developing collaborative projects. Companies can contribute to defining innovative solutions, participate in developing and testing products, technologies, or services, and leverage the scientific expertise and research infrastructure available within the university. The Technology Transfer Center of UMF Craiova facilitates the exact connection between researchers and the economic environment, identifies collaboration opportunities, and can transform research results into concrete applications with an impact on healthcare, biotechnology, medical devices, digital technologies, and other related fields. Examples of technologies and research results that can be transferred to the business environment include: Biotechnology and innovative cosmetic products: development of creams and cosmetic solutions based on plant extracts and hyaluronic acid, encapsulated in nanoparticles, featuring rapid absorption and increased efficacy, with no adverse effects on the skin; Medical devices: prototypes and technical solutions for diagnosis, monitoring, or medical assistance, developed within applied research projects; Innovative medical materials: dressings and bandages functionalized with antimicrobial and antifungal gels based on plant extracts, with potential application in infection prevention and accelerated wound healing; Digital health and artificial intelligence: AI-based algorithms and tools for optimizing diagnosis and personalized patient treatment tailored to individual profiles; Pharmaceutical biotechnology: formulations and molecules with therapeutic potential, preclinically tested, which can form the basis for the development of new pharmaceutical products; Personalized medicine and biomarkers: identification and validation of biomarkers useful in early diagnosis or in monitoring disease progression. The Days of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Craiova, 2026

On June 5, 2026, the University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Craiova will commemorate its anniversary with a series of events integrating education, scientific research, and academic community spirit. The anniversary proceedings will commence at 09:00 in the Aula Magna with the official opening ceremony of the UMF Craiova Days. This event will convene faculty members, students, researchers, alumni, and distinguished guests to honor the trajectory of an institution that has dedicated nearly three decades to the education and training of healthcare professionals. The year 2026 represents a milestone of significant symbolic value for the entire academic community, marking the 50th anniversary of the graduation of the inaugural cohort from the Faculty of Medicine in Craiova. The class of 1976 constitutes the founding generation of modern medicine in Craiova, having paved the way for thousands of physicians subsequently trained within this medical school. At 11:00, the Doctoral Students' Conference will commence in the "Mihai Ioana" Amphitheater. This forum is dedicated to the emerging generation of young scholars engaged in advanced medical research and the preservation of the academic legacy established by their predecessors. In the evening, at 19:00, the "Casa Medicului și Farmacistului" (The Physicians' and Pharmacists' Club) will host the Anniversary Collegial Reception. This gathering will provide an occasion for alumni, faculty, and institutional partners to reunite and celebrate their shared affiliation with the UMF Craiova community. On June 7, 2026, at 11:00, the "Valeriu Neștianu" Amphitheater will host the second edition of the symposium "BreakingMed – News that Makes You Sick." This session will examine the impact of medical misinformation on public health and the vital role of responsible communication in the public sphere. Half a century after the graduation of its first cohort, UMF Craiova expresses its profound gratitude to those who established the foundations of the medical school, while looking forward with confidence to the generations that will advance its mission. This anniversary serves, above all, as a celebration of the individuals who have progressively shaped, and continue to define, the history of medicine in Craiova.

Colorectal cancer screening in Oltenia: over 2,000 people included in the ROCCAS 4 SVO program

The regional colorectal cancer screening program (ROCCAS 4-SVO), implemented by the University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Craiova, is beginning to yield concrete results: over 2,000 people have already been enrolled. Initial tests have identified cases requiring further gastroenterological evaluation and colonoscopies, confirming the essential role of prevention and early detection Data centralized through mid-April shows not only a significant mobilization of the population in the South-West Oltenia region but also a validation of the objectives set at the project's launch: facilitating access to medical screening services for vulnerable groups and increasing awareness about the importance of preventive check-ups. Over 1,500 people have already benefited from preventive consultations with their family doctors, entered the screening workflow, and received the FIT test—a non-invasive method for the early detection of colorectal cancer. The testing process is already revealing important public health indicators—a 6.68% positivity rate for the FIT tests. This confirms the program's relevance and the necessity of early intervention in detecting oncological conditions. These interim results reflect the phased implementation of the project's objectives, particularly the facilitation of access to screening services for vulnerable groups and the enhancement of awareness regarding the importance of prevention. "The results so far show that prevention works when it reaches those who need it most. Through this program, we are not just talking about numbers, but about people who have the chance to be saved from developing colon cancer or the chance of an early diagnosis and, consequently, timely treatment. ROCCAS 4 SVO means access, trust, and responsibility – and our mission is to bring medicine closer to the people, not only through intervention but also through information and dialogue. This week, the first colonoscopies within the screening program for the residents of the Oltenia region are being performed at the UMF Craiova Prevention Center," stated the Rector of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Craiova, Prof. Dan Gheonea, PhD. The South-West Oltenia colorectal cancer screening program is carried out through the project: "Regional program for prevention, early detection, diagnosis, and early treatment of colorectal cancer South-West Oltenia (ROCCAS 4 SVO)", Code SMIS 344756. The project is implemented between September 30, 2025, and September 30, 2029, by the University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Craiova in partnership with the "Mereu Pentru Europa" Association. It has a total value of 35,331,054.42 RON, of which the non-reimbursable co-financing from the European Union amounts to 30,031,396.26 RON. Project co-financed by the European Union from the European Social Fund Plus through the 2021-2027 Health Program.
